Providence St. Patrick Hospital’s recent announcement that its Family Maternity Center will close on October 10, 2025, has triggered a strong reaction from the Missoula community. The hospital cited workforce shortages and declining birth rates as the primary reasons for the decision. However, the abrupt timing and lack of consultation with key medical staff have raised serious concerns.
Ob/Gyn physicians from the Western Montana Clinic report they were blindsided—only one of five physicians was invited to a meeting coinciding with the public announcement, while others found out through a memo. Staff from the center expressed their heartbreak and frustration, noting devoted work over the last decade and questioning the decision-making process, which they described as lacking compassion and transparency.
The Montana Nurses Association has also stepped in, urging the hospital to halt the closure process and engage in open dialogue with care providers and community stakeholders. With over 1,600 annual deliveries in the region and decades of team experience at stake, critics argue that the closure could leave significant gaps in maternal care and workforce support.
