Emergency Medical Personnel Sue Sheridan Hospital & Billings Clinic Over Wages
Plentywood, MT — A group of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), Paramedics, and Ambulance Personnel, led by Plaintiff Michael Peters, has filed a lawsuit against Sheridan Memorial Hospital Association and Billings Clinic, alleging violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and the Montana Wage Act.
The complaint, filed in the United States District Court of Montana – Great Falls Division, asserts that the Defendants unlawfully classified these frontline healthcare workers as exempt from overtime pay, resulting in substantial unpaid wages for hours worked beyond the standard 40-hour work week. The Plaintiffs specifically claim they were denied rightful compensation for time spent on-call, arguing that they were “engaged to wait” and therefore entitled to regular and overtime pay.
“This case is about fairness and accountability,” said Adrienne Tranel, representative for the Plaintiffs. “These first responders put their lives on the line every day. They deserve to be paid for every hour they are required to be available to serve their communities.”
In addition to recovering unpaid wages, the Plaintiffs are seeking reinstatement of lost benefits and penalties for the Defendants’ unlawful practices. The lawsuit highlights a broader systemic issue affecting the rights and livelihoods of emergency medical personnel across Montana.
With this legal action, the Plaintiffs aim to hold Sheridan Memorial Hospital Association and Billings Clinic accountable and to secure justice for all similarly situated employees who have experienced wage theft and misclassification.
